Fashion photographers | Fashion photography

While it may be true that photography has been around since the early 19th century, it wasn’t until the early 20th century that a specific type of photography known as ‘fashion photography’ really began to take off. This is when the work of these specialized photographers began to show up in French magazines. It shouldn’t surprise you that the first fashion photos were taken in the birthplace of fashion – Paris, France.

Fashion photographers like Australia’s own Jane Mcleish Kelsey can tell you all about the glamour of working in this particular genre. In speaking to fashion photographers who’ve been in the industry for quite some time, you’ll also find out that the work of a fashion photographer is not always filled with fun and excitement. The work is often more challenging than what it would appear on the outside.

Keep in mind that while the ultimate goal of a fashion photographer is to take photos of clothing and accessories, the job is also much more complex than this. Because the photographer is likely taking these pictures to be used as advertisements, the clothes must be shown in the most aesthetically pleasing way. Often times to make this happen fashion photographers find themselves in the strangest locations trying to capture the perfect shot. The work is often difficult and tedious, but thankfully, it is also very rewarding.

There are a few things that any professional photographer needs to have to be taken seriously (including fashion photographers). Take a look at the photographer must haves below:

  • Website – in today’s world it is very difficult to run a business without one
  • Portfolio – even with online photos, prospective employers may still want to see
  • Equipment – stay on the cutting edge with the materials you’ll need to be a photographer

Fashion Photographers worth their weight in gold will also have had to pay dues along the way to achieve success. If you are considering making fashion your specialty as a photographer, you would be wise to do the same. Finding a mentor among the fashion photographers who are making a name for themselves may not be easy, but it is possible.
