Finding the Perfect Wedding Photographer

November 12, 2012 by David Lye

When a special occasion is coming up in your life, or you want to remember or memorialize the moment, finding a photographer is your first step toward putting your memories on paper. However, depending on your scenario or need, finding a photographer isn’t always easy.

For example, when looking for a photographer for your wedding, one of your first considerations is going to be regarding cost. After all, you want someone who is able to capture your most precious and candid moments while at the same time not breaking your budget. Get the best of both worlds by choosing a lesser-known photographer in your area. For example, a photographer who has just opened his or her own business is a good way to not only saving money, but finding an excellent photographer that meets your needs. Always ask to review their portfolio first!

In addition, also consider hiring a student wedding photographer. A student wedding photographer may not have years of experience, but may be perfectly capable of shooting a small or casual wedding environment. Just because someone doesn’t have a famous photography business (yet) doesn’t mean they won’t be good. Again, the key is to visit the photographer and ask to see samples of similar types of photography.

Remember the old saying, ‘you get what you pay for’, so do keep that in mind when looking for economical choices in wedding photography. Spend the time researching prospective photographers and ask to meet with them at least once or twice before you agree to sign a contract to make sure that their personality, photography style, and portfolio meet your needs. Ensure that you’re choosing wisely and in the scope of your options and go with a trained professional, whether they’re new to the business or not.

You can also look for that perfect wedding photographer in commercial and freelance photographer directories, and by specialty, location, or type of photography that the individual offers. While you’re at it, get online and Google the photographer’s name to see what pops up. If the photographer has a website (and he or she should) look to see if there are any testimonials or feedback offered by former clients.

You can find good wedding photographers at economic and affordable prices, but expect to do your homework and take the time to compare at least three photographers who specialize in weddings in your area. Doing so will help ensure that your photographs capture those precious moments just like you remembered them.
