Types of Photography

February 18, 2013 by Luke Chapman

If you are an amateur photographer, you might be surprised to learn about the dozens of types of photography out there. Whether you want to use the old fashioned method of taking pictures or you want to specialize in something unique like Digiscoping (more about this later!) then you will be pleased to know there are variations of this wonderful hobby or career option to likely suit all interests. Here are some of the known, and lesser known, types of photography:

Aerial – Using aerial transportation to get overhead shots or images is exciting and gives photographers an amazing vantage point for a wide view. Aerial transportation usually involves a balloon, plane or helicopter – beautiful shots of landscape or city lights are wonderfully captured through aerial photography.

Architecture – Art comes in all forms and architecture is beautiful in its own right. Archways, ornate carvings or stunning landscape all create a lovely package and architecture or real estate photographers have an eye for capturing all of the details in a home or building. These photographers use panoramic images to capture a home and its landscape so it appears attractive and sale worthy.

Black and White – When you take colour out of a photograph, you are left with a variety of textures, shapes, shadows and tones. Keeping images void of colour takes skill in finding the right amount of natural light and creative images.

Digiscoping – A unique form of photography, Digiscoping is taking pictures through a binoculars or telescope. These high-powered magnifications can provide a spectacular sense of detail – using the lens is a great and innovate way to take pictures.

Pinhole – One of the first cameras was known as the Pinhole camera and photographers love to use this basic camera as a way to keep it simple and old-fashioned. A pinhole camera is simply a box and a tiny hole that allows light to come in – photographers enjoy trying to use the camera to get unique pictures.

Stock – While some photographers like to take images that are personal or have emotional attachment, stock photographers take images that are to be distributed to others for use in outside projects. Not all photographers like this kind of work, but it does get your name out there.

These are just a few of the types of photography out there – plenty others such as travel, urban or sports are sure to interest people at all levels of experience!
