Marketing Tips for Your Photography Business

February 21, 2013 by Luke Chapman

Starting a business is the easy part, marketing and advertising it is something much different. If you have decided you want to start a photography business, you will want to create a few marketing plans to market yourself as a photographer and get new business. As with any business and marketing, there is not a one-size fits all approach – you will need to try a few options until you find one that fits with your budget and needs. Here are a few photographer tips from around the world that have started a photography business:

• Word of Mouth – One of the easiest and least expensive methods to marketing your business is to provide exceptional customer service. Take special care of your clients – one way to leave a good, lasting impression is to send them a thank you card after a photography session. Reward your previous clients with incentives to keep coming back and always provide a discount or incentive when they refer new clients to you.

• Get yourself known – If you don’t go out there and share your services, no one will know you exist. Create a website with your work and then add the website name to business cards so you can pass them out at photography conventions or trade shows. Set up at local events and ask about taking pictures – they might ask you to do other shows down the line! Social media is a huge resource to getting new attention, so create a Facebook page or online ads to get your face and skills recognized.

• Pricing – If you are just starting out, you might not be able to get away with asking outrageous prices. Keep the price tag competitive and offer bundled pricing or discounts to encourage more purchasing. People who buy your photographs do so because the work is good, but they won’t want to pay more than some well-known work – so keep that in mind. Stay flexible, too. Offer themed shoots or party photographs at a discount if they book in advance.

Starting any business takes work and effort to get it off the ground, so you might have to provide work at first at a lower cost than you want until you become more recognized in the field. Implement two or more of the marketing tips and watch your business grow in just a few short months!

Another way to get your name out there is to exhibit your personal work in galleries. There are a number of artist run spaces around that are in good locations, have a extensive email list and welcome applications from photographers.
